Jerry Ellis Pace

Jerry Ellis Pace, 81, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on July 28, 2026. He was born March 4, 1945, and was born, raised, and lived his entire life in Chattanooga—a steady, hometown life marked by devotion, quiet purpose, and the kind of humor that could soften even ordinary days.

A graduate of Central High School, Jerry carried his love for his community into a career spent helping shape it. He began in state planning, then moved to the Regional Planning Agency, ultimately retiring after 40 years of dedicated service as the Director of Development Services. Through decades of work, he offered not only commitment, but a grounded presence, faithful to the task, and to the people his work served.

For 61 years, Jerry was married to his wife, Doris Duke Pace. He is survived by his wife and his two sons, Daniel M. Pace and David M. Pace (Alisha); his granddaughter, Emma Pace; and several nieces and nephews. Above all, Jerry loved his family, and that devotion was the throughline of his life, constant, unshowy, and deeply felt.

Jerry was an exceptional artist, particularly skilled in painting landscapes and portraits, working primarily in watercolors and oils. In his art lived both tenderness and wit: a patient eye for detail, and a lightness that made room for joy. He also cherished his quiet place down by the pond, where stillness could be its own kind of conversation.

A devoted fan, Jerry followed the Tennessee Vols and the Atlanta Braves with the loyal enthusiasm of someone who understood that hope, tradition, and a good laugh all belong together. Even though he would occasionally use the term "pitiful" to describe both. He was, in every sense, beloved—held close not only for what he did, but for the warmth and gentle humor he brought into the lives around him.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice of Chattanooga, Tennessee Oncology, and CHI Memorial for the wonderful care that was given to Jerry.

There will be no formal services per Jerry’s wishes.
