

Jewell Dean Mansel Sutherland passed away on April 22, 2016 comfortably in her home surrounded by her beloved husband of 58 years and her two adoring daughters. Jewell lived an exemplary life. She was a selfless individual who always focused on others. Anyone who saw her immediately commented on her beautiful sky blue eyes.
Jewell was born in Chattanooga, TN on February 21, 1938, along with her twin brother Joel. She grew up in East Chattanooga in the Avondale area. She was one of eight children and loved to tell stories of her childhood growing up with her brothers and sisters. She met the love of her life and married him on March 29, 1958. Her entire life was devoted to the service of her family and to others, caring for children and the absolute joys of her life, her 6 grandchildren.
Later in her life, her health failed her and she spent the last 15 years on hemodialysis. She made it her life’s mission to know and be friends with all the dialysis patients and staff at DCI East Ridge. Her husband cared for her 24/7 and met her every need. She is preceded in death by her parents, Barton and Ethel Mansel, and all of her siblings.
She is survived by her husband B.C. (Sam) Sutherland, East Ridge; her daughters Nancy (Mike) Tucker, Chattanooga, and Jill (Allen) Forgey, Ooltewah; as well as her six grandchildren, Jeff (Alayna) Tucker, Kevin (Ashley) Tucker, Bryan (Caitlin) Tucker, Sam Forgey, Amy Forgey (Andrew Hughes) and Will Forgey, and two great granddaughters Zinnia Jewell Tucker and Kamden Reese Tucker, and several nieces and nephews.
Based on Jewell’s wishes, a private family funeral service will be held at the National Cemetery.
