

John D. Hoover, age 88, of Rossville died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 in Chattanooga. He was a native of Graysville, TN and graduated from Rhea Central High School with the class of 1940. After high school he enlisted in the U. S. Navy for 6 years serving aboard the USS Eberle and stationed at the U. S Naval Base Londonderry, North Ireland, the U. S. Navy Post Office, Belfast, North Ireland and the U. S. Navy Operation Base in Bremerton, Washington. After his navy service he attended the Bowling Green College of Commerce and the University of Chattanooga. After 35 1/2 years of employment with Provident he took early retirement in 1982 as Assistant General Auditor Claims.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years Geraldine Freeman Hoover, his parents Spurgeon and Nanette Hoover, three brothers Charles Hoover, Robert Hoover and Herbert W. Hoover.
Survivors include his sons John D. “Johnny” Hoover of Rossville and Randy Hoover of Elkhart, TX; two sisters Nanette Hoover Morgan of Huntsville, AL and Mary Ann Hoover Ledbetter of Mt Juliet, TN; two grandchildren Randall Hoover of Dallas, TX and Leigh Ann Hoover of Jackson, MS.
He was a member of the First Christian Church for over 50 years. He and his late wife Geraldine “Gerry” for a number of years taught the Hope Class for Orange Grove in Sunday School and Church, they volunteered in the church’s participation with the Community Kitchen and Habitat For Humanity.
He was a member of the Manker Patten Tennis Club for over 50 years. He and his tennis partner Gene Hatfield were ranked #2 in Senior Men’s Doubles in Tennessee in 1969 and he and his partner, Herschel Sellers, won the Senior Men’s Olympics, over age 65, Tennis Doubles in Tennessee in 1989. He served as chairman of the TVI Tennis Tournament in Chattanooga.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday July 2, 2011 at 6:00 pm in the First Christian Church.
The body will be cremated and the remains placed in the First Christian Church All Saints Memorial Garden.
