Juanita was born July 2, 1916 and grew up in Bluefield, WV. She graduated from Bluefield College and Duke University School of Medical Technology and was a member of the Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
She came to Chattanooga in 1939 as the bride of J.C. Grainger. In former years she was an active member of the Chattanooga Symphony Guild, Chattanooga Civic Chorus, Missionary Ridge PTA, and Crestwood Garden Club. For many years she taught Sunday school at First Baptist Church and was very active in the Women’s Missionary Union. She was the last surviving member of the Planning and Survey Committee where the church moved to the Golden Gateway. She had a great interest in literacy and was a volunteer teacher in C.A.L.M. (no R.E.A.D.) and also tutored reading in an inner city school. She helped to begin the conversational English classes of the Hamilton County Baptist Association, and was the director of the classes in her church for many years.
She enjoyed bicycling, travel, reading, and especially her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C., son, Jim, parents, one sister, and two brothers, sister-in-law, Noreen Evans, and a niece, Jane Hixson.
Left behind to cherish Juanita’s memory are her son, Dr. Chris (Patti) Grainger, Ocala, FL., grandchildren, Todd (Teresa) Grainger, Douglas (Abby) Grainger, and Martha Beavers of Denver, CO., great-grandchildren, Luke Grainger, Ruby Jane Beavers, Patrick Grainger, James Grainger and Sam Grainger, sister, Nell Scruggs, San Antonio, TX., sister-in-law, Sue Bowman, Bluefield, WV., many nieces and nephews, among whom are, Reggie Hixson, Rossville, GA., Linda Murphy, James Murphy, Laura, Charlie, Casey and Dana Walden of Chattanooga.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a future date to be announced due to the pandemic. She will be laid to rest with her husband in the Chattanooga Memorial Park in a private family ceremony.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Bluefield College, 3000 College Drive, Bluefield, VA. 24065 or First Baptist Church, 401 Gateway Ave, Chattanooga, TN. 37402.
