Marjorie Ann Phifer Mayfield

Marjorie Ann Phifer Mayfield, born December 19th, 1928, passed away Sunday, June 28th at the age of 97. Margie “Granny” was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was immensely proud of her family.

Margie was born to Mary (Lacy) and Oliver Phifer in Akron, Ohio. During the depression, she was raised in McMinnville, Tennessee and then settled in Chattanooga.

She was a graduate of Red Bank High School and began her 15-year career at Dupont in 1948 where she was one of the first Foreladies. During this time, she began her family and worked alongside her husband to start Red Wing Exterminating Company. She continued to work at Mayfield Brothers Pest Control in Cleveland, Tennessee until her mid 80’s.

Margie was a founding and current member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. In her earlier years, she was an active member of the Valmont Club, involved in politics (local, state and national) as well as active in both the church and PTA activities.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Jack D. Mayfield, her sons Johnathan David and Joseph Dale, her parents Oliver and Mary Phifer and her little brother Jim Phifer.

She is survived by her sons Dan Mayfield (Lynne), David Mayfield (Julie), Oliver Mayfield (Angie); daughters Sidney Nelson Brown (Millard) and Sandy Probst (John); her 9 grandchildren Jay Mayfield (Leigh), Emily Darr (Paul), Taylor Monen (Mike), Tenley Brown (Tim), Jonathan Mayfield, Alex Nelson, Drew Nelson, Ethan Nelson (Katie), and Chelsea Darras (Michael) as well as 11 great grandchildren Lily Monen, Simon Monen, Cooper Darr, Charlotte Darr, Lauren Mayfield, Avery Brown, Forrest Nelson, Theo Darras, Logan Brown, Effie Nelson and Ayla Nelson. Margie is also survived by her sisters Jeanne Farmer and Dolores Howell as well as many nieces, nephews, and other beloved family members.

Margie left behind a legacy of strength, kindness, determination, fearlessness as well as an unwavering sense of hope, promise and responsibility. Her family is blessed to have had her leadership, loyalty and conviction. Margie, “mom” “granny” and “great granny” was greatly respected, deeply loved and adored by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends who knew her well. She will be missed by all and those examples she has set will live on for the future generations to come.

As a family we are grateful to God for those who cared for our mother. They have provided a measure of comfort in her time of need with compassion, humor and grace.

A funeral mass will be held on Thursday July 9, 2026, at 11 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Mike Nolan officiating. The family will receive friends at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Wednesday July 8, 2026, from 3-7 pm. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband, Jack, in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in loving memory of her brother to the Jim Phifer Scholarship Fund Notre Dame High School, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
