

Marjorie Thelma Pirkle Colquitt passed away comfortably and peacefully in the presence of the Lord with her family at her bedside on Friday, October 31, 2014. On March 25, 1919, she was the first of three daughters born to E.O. and Sally Pirkle. She grew up in St. Elmo and was a lifetime resident of Chattanooga. She graduated with distinction from Chattanooga City High School in 1937 and Edmondson Business College in 1937.
She was married on June 6, 1941 to Richard Edward Colquitt, Sr. who preceded her in death on December 15, 2001. They enjoyed 65 years together raising a family, working in the Church, visiting with friends and family, and traveling.
After raising her children, Jane and Rusty, she enjoyed returning to work including with the Election Commission, County Court System, and Hamilton County Human Services.
She was an active member and participant of various Church of God congregations for over 65 years serving as Church Clerk and Ladies Adult Sunday School Class Teacher. Most recently she was a member of the Crossing Church of God.
Surviving relatives include her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Reverend Manning Thornton (Birmingham, AL); son and daughter-in-law, Rusty and Linda Colquitt (Signal Mountain); younger sister, Mary Lee Baugh (Chattanooga); and grandchildren, Becky Thornton, Christi Colquitt, Jonathan Thornton (Jana), John Duke Colquitt, Mary Kathrine Colquitt; and great grandchildren, Gracey Thornton and Emma Thornton. She was predeceased by one sister, Mildred Ramsey (Greensboro, NC).
Her life was richly blessed by the Lord. She gave of herself unconditionally to her children, her family, and friends. Although she will be missed greatly, we celebrate with her, her new everlasting home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road with the Rev. Manning Thornton and the Rev. Terry Harris officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday and 9 AM to 10 AM Tuesday at the funeral home.
