

Born August 5, 1934 in Chattanooga to the late Paul and Juanita Scoggins, she graduated from Chattanooga High School and then the University of Chattanooga where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She worked as a model for Miller Brothers department store during summers and breaks. Upon graduation, she was employed in the maps and surveys department of TVA.
She married Bill in 1957 and raised her family in Chattanooga before spending several years in Nashville, TN and Atlanta, GA. She couldn’t stay away from Chattanooga though and returned there upon her husband’s retirement in 2000. She treasured her family and also had a wonderful group of close friends whom she loved dearly. Peggy and Bill were married for 57 years before Bill’s death in 2014.
Peggy was a longtime member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church and the Morgan Sunday School Class as well as First-Centenary United Methodist Women.
Peggy was a successful artist who won many competitions and was invited to show her work throughout the Southeast. Her painting “Mountain High” was chosen for the Keep Georgia Beautiful program. She was a member of the In-Town Gallery, North Chattanooga Book Club, Morgan Bridge Club, Chattanooga Theatre Center, Walden Club, and the Hunter Museum for American Art.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Julius Billy Huffstutler. She is survived by her three children, Laura (Matthew) Lonergan of Nashville, Stuart (Katie) Huffstutler of Atlanta and Julie (David) Rutter of Nashville; five grandchildren, Drew (Haley) Lonergan of Clarksville, Zach Rutter, Graeme Rutter, Thomas Rutter and Emily Rutter, all of Nashville.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 14, at 12:00 EST in the Kate Lyle West chapel at
First-Centenary United Methodist Church. Visitors will be received at the church prior to the service beginning at 11:00. A private burial will be held at the National Cemetery.
