Peggy Young Merritt passed away on October 26, 2026. She was born on February 18, 1949, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to William Russell Young Sr. and Mary Martin Young. She graduated from Brainerd High School and attended the University of Chattanooga. Peggy worked for many years in her family’s business, and later in life, she found joy in tax preparation and the relationships she formed through her work.
Peggy was the loving wife of Edward Keither Merritt Jr. for 55 years and a devoted mother to William Keither Merritt and his wife, Carolyn, of Durham, North Carolina. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Mary Ellis Merritt and William Wedeles Merritt, both of whom brought her tremendous joy.
Peggy was one of four children. Her siblings were William Russell Young Jr., Sally Young Staples, and Susan Young Goins, who preceded her in death. She was also an aunt to many beloved nieces and nephews.
At the heart of Peggy’s life was her genuine and abiding faith. It shaped her compassion for others, her devotion to her family, and the remarkable strength with which she faced life’s challenges. She brought joy, warmth, empathy, and a wonderful sense of humor to the people around her.
Through years of health struggles, Peggy demonstrated extraordinary resilience. Her faith gave her the strength to meet hardship with courage, belief, and grace. Even during difficult times, her love for her family, her concern for others, and her faith remained steadfast.
Peggy will be remembered for her enduring faith, her warmth and compassion, her remarkable strength, and the deep love she had for her family. The love and kindness she shared so freely will remain with those who knew her and will continue to touch the lives of others.
We take comfort in knowing that Peggy is at peace, restored and whole.
