Robert Claussen Meyer

Robert (Bob) Claussen Meyer of Chattanooga, Tennessee, fell asleep in Jesus and went to heaven on August 28, 2026, ten days short of his 100th birthday. He was born on September 6, 1926, as the son of John Henry Meyer Jr. and Clara Johanna Claussen Meyer.

Robert attended Central High School from 1940-1944. He served in the Navy from 1944-1946. On July 27, 1946, he married Gwendolyn Elizabeth Westbrook. They raised 5 children: Pam Weinhold (Paul) of Makanda, IL, Jane Otte (Marlin) of Marion, IL, Steve Meyer (Gail) of Chattanooga, TN, Phyllis (Jim) Joy of Calhoun, GA, Alice Meyer (Bill Buchanan) of Chattanooga, TN. A son, Timothy Meyer died as an infant.

Robert earned his degree in Chemistry from the University of Chattanooga in 1949 after he returned from the war and worked as a Quality Engineer at DuPont in Chattanooga from 1951- 1994. Upon retirement, Robert served as a Volunteer for many years at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga. Other activities during retirement included gardening, square dancing and round dancing, traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Robert was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church serving in the Choir and in many leadership, capacities including President of the Congregation, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Board of Elders and taught numerous Bible classes.

Robert is survived by his dear wife, Gwen, to whom he was devoted for 80 years. His life was defined by faithfulness, integrity, and steadfast love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion to his children and their spouses, 10 grandchildren, two of whom passed before him, and 14 great-grandchildren. Those siblings who predeceased him are his brother John Henry Meyer II, sister Pauline Meyer Mumm, sister Alice Meyer Mariani, and brother Edgar Meyer. His brother, Walter Meyer, survives Robert.

Trustworthiness was one of many words that described Robert. It is exceptional that Robert and Gwen were together for over 80 years (they met in High School). He led a life of trustworthiness, decency, goodness, kindness, and love. His legacy endures in the countless memories he leaves behind, and, in the example, he set for generations of family, friends, and all who knew him.

The visitation and celebration of life will be held at First Lutheran Church, 2800 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, Tennessee on Friday, September 4. Visitation 1-2 p.m. and service at 2 p.m.
