

Sharon Olinger of East Ridge passed away Friday, December 9, 2016. She was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College, Lincoln Memorial University and received her Master’s in Education from UTC. She retired from Hamilton County Schools after a 33 year career as a Social Worker including several years as lead Social Worker for Chattanooga City Schools. While living in Pennington Gap, Virginia, Mrs. Olinger was a Social Worker for the Virginia Department of Welfare, providing services and support for the impoverished families of the area. Education and helping children were Mrs. Olinger’s passion, having helped countless numbers of children throughout the years. Whether working through the social system or on a personal level, she was known as “Mom” to not only her own, but to many other children as well.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Olinger; her brother, James Morgan and her parents, George and Katherine Morgan.
Survivors include her children, Rebecca Olinger Tate (Thomas) of Cumming, GA, Travis Olinger (Tara) of East Ridge and Brandon Olinger (Taylor) of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren, Lauren Olinger, Morgan Tate, Maddie Olinger, Kendall Tate, Emma Olinger, Aubrey Olinger and Travis Cage Olinger; one brother, George Morgan.
The family will receive friends from 2-8 PM Tuesday December 13th at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road.
Charitable contributions in honor of Sharon Olinger can be made to Chambliss Center for Children or Children’s Advocacy Center of Hamilton County.
