Shirley Ruth Isenberg Bunn, age 91, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026 surrounded by family. Shirley was born in Chattanooga on June 22, 1935 to Fred & Willie Mae (Billie) Isenberg. She grew up in downtown Chattanooga, graduating from City High School.
Shirley was a proud graduate of Carson-Newman College. She lived in several Southern states, returning to Chattanooga in 1971 with her two sons. Settling in Brainerd, near family, she began her career with the public school system as librarian, working at Dalewood & Brainerd High School.
Shirley had a strong faith & was active in church throughout her life, most recently as a member of First Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, managed the church library, and taught Sunday School for many years.
Shirley was a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother & friend. She developed strong ties with neighbors, fellow church members and co-workers who so appreciated her humor, her loyalty, and her generous spirit. Shirley loved to travel, visiting the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the pyramids, and many other beautiful places around the world.
Shirley is survived by her two sons, Sam (Lorrie) Bunn and Steve (Jennifer) Bunn, grandson Lawson (Breck) Bunn and his mother, Barbara Stanfield.
Sadly, during the last few years Shirley was afflicted with dementia. She became a resident at The Lantern where she received wonderful care. Even as her days became more challenging, the caregivers were charmed by her laughter and kindness.
A celebration of life will be held July 11 at 1 PM in the chapel of First Baptist Church, 401 Gateway Avenue, Chattanooga. Visitation is July 10 from 4-8 PM and July 11 at noon, also at First Baptist. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
