On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, Al “Stoney” Stoneking, loving husband and father of five children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, passed away at the age of 86. Stoney was born on December 24, 1934 in Cherokee, IA. He grew up in Schleswig, IA, where he played football and basketball, once scoring 50 points in a game. He served a career in the U.S. Army, including two tours in Vietnam. On March 15, 1958, he married Marjorie Sturtevant Matthews. Together they raised five children, John, Mike, Jen, Dan and Jason. He lived most recently in East Stroudsburg, PA, but previously enjoyed many family years in Centre Harbor, NH.
Stoney could start a conversation with anyone and almost always left people smiling and often laughing. He had the natural aptitude to fix just about anything and even built a family home in New Hampshire. He worked hardware sales for years. He knew the exact bolt, washer, or crescent wrench that anyone needed. He saved lives as a voluntary fireman. However, you would seldom hear him talk about his successes. He was a humble man. Once, he forgot to bring the deviled eggs to a family picnic. He was reminded of this regularly. His greatest joys were the tender love and comfort he gave his beautiful wife and supporting his children’s special events and life experiences.
Stoney is survived by his wife and all five of his children. There will not be a public service. Instead of a donation, the best way to honor him would be to make someone smile today.
