June was born on June 1, 1919 in Lake Ariel, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Elwood and Sarah (Rockwell) Ammerman. During World War II June married a Navy Lieutenant named Charles Russell Barhight. Together they parented two children Douglas Elwood of Bradford PA and Charles “Scott” of Slatington Pa. Russ died in 1953. June continued to love him and keep his memories alive by sharing her love for him with family and friends until her death. She often spoke of looking forward to reuniting with her beloved husband upon her passing.
June cherished her time with her two sons and their wives Rosemary (married to Douglas) and Debbie (married to Scott), the family often joked that she liked her daughters-in-law more then she liked her sons. Her grandchildren, Allison Kunkel, Meghan Barhight, Jessica Rehrig, and Katherine Ray all used to tease each other and their grandmother as to whom was her favorite grandchild. June would quickly answer “You’re all my favorites.” In recent years she was blessed with three great grandchildren Ellie, Tyler, and Jayden. June would gleam when she spoke of them.
At age 38 a widow with children ages 7 and 10, June enrolled as a student at East Stroudsburg University. She successfully completed bachelors and masters degrees in education, graduating with honors. After graduation June taught 3rd grade at Hamilton Elementary School in the Stroudsburg School District. She loved the students she taught and treasured the 25 years of working with students and colleagues at Hamilton School. Upon her retirement she worked as a volunteer reading tutor for the next twelve years.
June and her dear friend, Helen Eilenberger volunteered at the train station for the Monroe County Historical Society. She served on the Board of Directors of the Meadow Lake Fishing Club. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed dinning out with her many friends in the area. She was a member of the Wesleyan Church. June is predeceased by a brother Earl Ammerman and a sister Donna Gruver.
June was loved by her family, her friends and many of her former students. She will be missed.
