
Mary E. Berger, 83 of East Stroudsburg, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015 peacefully at home with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late John L. Berger and they shared 39 years of marriage.
She was born March 26, 1931 in Ashland, PA; she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Markculin) Horvath.
Mary was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg. She participated in local church and travel groups where she had many great times traveling with her precious friends. Most notably Mary was a master cook who enjoyed cooking and entertaining no matter what the occasion. She loves gardening and flowers of any type, especially tulips. She made sure that all animals were fed well, spending much time watching the birds and other critters form her home. For over 12 years she was an active and respected volunteer for RSVP (retired senior citizen program of Monroe County.) She moved to Monroe County from Bucks County after the death of her husband to live with her daughter. She always stated the move to the county enriched her life as she met many new friends and was closer to her daughter. Mary had a great passion to learn, taking night classes in foreign languages prior to her traveling. She loved gardening, decorating and reading historical novels. For the past few years she always looked forward to traveling, especially the trips to St. Martin with her beloved with daughter and son-in-law. Mary was a friend to all, loved unconditionally and will surely be missed.
Surviving are daughter; Donna Steinman and husband Bill, East Stroudsburg, PA; sister Liz Pohl and her husband Max, Pittsburg, PA; brother Charles Horvath and his late wife Peggy, Levittown, PA; nieces Chrissy, and Michelle; nephews Alex and Kenny.
In addition to her parents and husband John she was preceded in death by, sisters; Helen Wessner and Anne Martinelli; Brothers George and John Horvath; nephew Wally; and niece Paula.
A public visitation will be Thursday, March 26, 2015 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm at the Lanterman and Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 27 Washington St. East Stroudsburg, PA 18301. Celebration of her life will continue as Individuals are invited to BIG A Steakhouse on Route 209 in Marshalls Creek at 4:00 on Friday, March 27, 2015 for snacks and sharing

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM Friday, March 27, 2015 at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, 5171 Milford Rd. East Stroudsburg, PA 18302 with the Rev. Jeffrey J. Walsh as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Josephs Cemetery in Fountain Springs PA.
