Mary Cohen, 75, of Lake Ariel, passed away in the comfort of her home on Friday July 8, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Melvin Cohen with whom she celebrated 57 years of marriage with on February 14.
She was born on October 12, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of the late Michael and Jenny Gargano.
A true love story from the start. Mary and Mel worked together at a department store and although they did not know one another they were very aware of each other’s presence. Mary was engaged to another, but knew when she saw Mel that one day she would marry him. Mel was entranced by her beauty and kissed Mary at a New Year’s Eve Party. It was then that they both knew it was meant to be. Mel went home and told his mother that he had tingles from head to toe. A few weeks later Mel told Mary he would ask her to a dance if it weren’t for her engagement ring, Mary took the ring off and they went on their first date to the Valentine’s Day party. The music played and after their first dance Mel said “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Mary replied “Yes”. They applied for a marriage license the next day and were married less than a week later on Valentine’s Day 1959. One kiss, one dance, one love that lasted a lifetime.
Mary was an amazing wife, wonderful mother and the best grandma. She was a take-charge kind of woman, who could do anything she put her mind to. She loved sitting on the porch, sipping coffee with her husband and spending time with her family. Mary loved to travel. She had an eye for interior design and enjoyed shopping. Planting shrubs and spending time in the garden were amongst some of her favorite things to do. Anyone who knew Mary knew that dessert brought a smile to her face especially yellow cake with chocolate icing and pancakes with warm maple syrup. Mary was a strong, talented and loving woman who will be sincerely missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her sister Ella Mondiello and her mother-in-law Ruth Cohen.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband: Melvin Cohen; daughter: Kim Catalano and husband Glenn, of Marshalls Creek; son: Michael Cohen, of Stroudsburg ; grandchildren: Meghan Catalano and fiancé Tyler Reddick, of Marshalls Creek, Joshua Catalano and partner, Curtis Silverwood, of West Chester, PA and her beloved great grand dog Max.
Cremation was private. Interment will take place at Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg, at the convenience of the family.
