

Born and raised in the family home on Main Street in Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Helen (Reinhart) Monahan.
She attended St. Matthew’s Catholic School through the 8th grade and then graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1941. Mary later graduated from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College in 1945 with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education. She taught High School for one year in Blairstown, NJ and then at Stroudsburg High School until 1952. She married her high school sweetheart, Art Henning in May 1945, and assisted her husband in his plumbing, construction, and real estate businesses. In 1969, she opened and operated the Norgetown Laundromat on Phillips Street, which she operated until 1990.
Throughout her life, Mary worked hard and gave her time, knowledge, and dedication to her family and community. In 1957, she became the first President of the Monroe County Mental Health Association, which evolved into the Monroe Carbon Pike Mental Health/Developmental Services Agency. As a parishioner of St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church she was a member of the Women’s Guild; she also served as a past President of the St. Matthew’s Altar and Rosary Society. Mary was the former President of the Stroud Community Club and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP); and was a co-chairwoman of the 1995 book “Women Who Made History in Monroe County.” She was a volunteer at the Church for the Women United’s Children’s Clothing Room, a board member of Pocono Services for Families and Children (Head Start) and Meals on Wheels. She was also an ardent supporter of Pocono Area Transitional Housing and the Salvation Army’s Food Pantry.
In 1994 she was named Humanitarian of the Year by the Pocono Mountain Chamber of Commerce; in 1995, she was awarded the ESU Alumni Honor Award; in 2003 she received the Eugenia Eden Award from Pocono Services for Family and Children; in 2004 she received the Helen G. Brown Quality of Life Humanitarian Award from the Monroe County Area Agency on Aging; in 2006, she received the Margaret Wells Award from Pocono Area Transitional Housing (PATH), and in 1999 she was the Grand Marshal of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Mary was also dedicated to her family and is survived by her children, Margaret (Peg) Stohler and her husband Larry of Lebanon, Daniel Henning and his wife Toni of Stroudsburg and Edward Henning of East Stroudsburg; grandchildren, Lyle Stohler and his wife Kristen of Alaska, Kathryn Lawlor and her husband Daniel of Nevada, Luke Henning, Kirsten Henning, Brooke Henning and Keegan Henning all of Stroudsburg; sister-in-law Maryellen Poe and her husband Dale (Wimp) of Lehighton, and her nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Monahan.
There will be a viewing from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 14 at the Lanterman and Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 15 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 818 Main St. Stroudsburg with Father Carmen Perry as celebrant. Burial will follow at Laurelwood Cemetery in Stroudsburg.
