Richard Allen Eppley, 90, of East Stroudsburg, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2022. He was the loving husband of the late Joyce (Robinson) Eppley with whom he had shared 59 years of marriage at the time of her passing.
Richard was born on March 10, 1932, he was the son of the late Martha Eppley. Being a lifetime East Stroudsburg resident, he attended the JS Bunnell and JM Hill Schools. As a project of his high school shop class, he took part in building the original ESASD Memorial Stadium. After graduation, he joined the Navy and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Johnsville, PA, as a Helicopter Navigator and Crew Chief. Upon his discharge, he returned to his hometown to assist longtime friend, Frank Lanterman, with recovery efforts of the 1955 Flood. Soon following, he brought his new bride and love of his life home to begin their family.
Prior to his retirement, Richard was “working on the railroad, all the live long day” for 40 years. He had been an engineer for Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. He advanced to the position of Trainmaster Road Foreman of Engineers for Conrail in the Scranton-Port Jervis-Binghamton, N.Y., region. He was an active member of the Varsity E Club, the Optimist Club, the Elks Club, an umpire for adult softball and baseball leagues, and is a past president of ESASD’s 50-Plus Club. He helped to build and maintain the East Stroudsburg Little League stadium with his good friend, John Konawalik, for whom the field is named.
Richard was a sports enthusiast. He took special interest in football, baseball, wrestling and NASCAR. He was often requested to help young athletes improve upon their skills.
Being a member of the Holiday Ramblers Club, Richard had enjoyed travelling with his wife and their dog, Girl, in their RV throughout the United States, easily making friends along the way.
Richard had loved taking care of his son Damon’s lively dogs, Bella and Sorella, after his passing.
Surviving are his daughter Dawn (Eppley) Chighizola, son Daryl Eppley and his wife, Cheryl, son Daren Eppley and his wife Betty Jane, and son Dane Eppley. Richard is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his twin brother Ronald Eppley, and his sons Dean Eppley and Damon Eppley.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Cremation is entrusted to the Lanterman-Allen Funeral Home.
