Brent Michael Bushey, 49 passed away on October 9, 2026 in Mercy Hospital OKC, OK. Born in Flint, Michigan, Brent’s early years gave rise to his excellence in athletics, academics and building lifelong friendships. Brent earned his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University where he participated in the Men’s Glee Club, serving as the Club’s President for 2 years. After graduation, Brent was accepted into Teach for America as a high school teacher and athletic coach in New Orleans. This is where he met his beloved wife, Kirsten. After teaching, he continued with TFA as a recruiter for the program on the West Coast. After a short, but very fun stint living on the West Coast, Brent pursued his masters degree in Public Administration at George Washington University finishing at the top of his class. Brent then went on to work for the federal government in various capacities. In 2013, Brent and his family embarked on the journey of a lifetime by moving to Oklahoma City. He served as the founding Executive Director of the Oklahoma Public School Resource center for just over 10 years before transitioning to become the founding Executive Director of Fuel OKC in January of 2024.
Brent’s legacy can best be described as being a Force for Good through the relentless advocacy for what was right---even if it was hard. He gave pause to show that everyday was a gift and that beauty was everywhere. His personal loves in life were spending time outdoors, beach-time with his family and a heaping dose of fishing, fishing and more fishing. Brent led a life that left a wake of love and passion that will be sorely missed by all that he came in contact with. He is survived by his spouse Kirsten Wright, children Madeline & Charlotte Bushey, parents Richard & Kay Bushey, Father & Mother in-law Steven & Carol Wright, Siblings Joseph & Brian Bushey, his spouse Erika, nieces Natalie, Kaytlin, Ella and nephews Michael and Blake Bushey.
A service to honor Brent’s life is planned for Friday, October 23 at 2pm at St Luke’s Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, OK, with a reception to follow. An additional memorial in Michigan will be set for friends and family, TBD soon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma.
