Don was born on September 11, 1940, in Jacksboro, Texas, to Melvin Wayman Wilton and Thelma Mae (Sheppard) Wilton.
After graduating from Bryson High School in Texas, Don began his career working in the Texas oil fields on drilling rigs and driving pump trucks. Through years of hard work, dedication, and leadership, he built a successful career in the oil and gas industry, ultimately serving as Production Superintendent for an independent Oklahoma oil and gas company before retiring.
On November 21, 1959, Don married Barbara Lynn Souther in Graham, Texas. Together they shared 42 years of marriage before Barbara’s passing in 2002. They provided a united front and a solid foundation while raising their three children, teaching them by example the values of hard work, integrity, love, and commitment to family. Throughout their marriage, strong family and friend bonds were created and Don made it a priority to continue these relationships after Barabara’s passing, knowing the importance of family and life long friends.
After the loss of his beloved wife, Barbara, Don was blessed with a second chance at love when he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Joan. They were married on February 19, 2006, and spent 20 years together enjoying life, family, and the joy of finding one another again after so many years apart.
Don was a devoted father and grandfather who rarely missed an opportunity to support his family. Whether it was a sporting event, dance recital, school play, concert, or another special occasion, his children and grandchildren could almost always count on him being there. More often than not, he could be found in his pearl snap shirt, boots, and cowboy hat, proudly supporting those he loved most.
Family was at the center of Don’s life. The family gathered each week at Don’s home to visit, laugh, and spend time together. Don and Joan always had delicious desserts waiting, whether it was brownies, cherry chocolate dump cake, or peach cobbler served with ice cream. There was always a candy bowl filled with the family’s favorite treats, making everyone feel welcome the moment they walked through the door.
At Christmas time, Don became especially famous for his homemade peanut clusters. He made so many that family members would leave with baggies full of peanut clusters to enjoy at home, and there were usually enough to keep everyone supplied for weeks. It was one of the many traditions that made time spent with Don so special and created memories their family will always treasure.
Don enjoyed listening to classic country and western music, spending time with friends, and making memories with Joan. Together they loved going dancing with friends and taking trips to Branson, Missouri, where they enjoyed attending live music shows. Those times together brought them great happiness and became some of their most treasured memories.
Don’s faith was an important part of his life. He was honored to lead the family in prayer before meals when everyone gathered together. Don and Joan also enjoyed attending Cowboy Church.
Those who knew Don will remember him as a generous, kind, and caring man who was always dependable and willing to lend a helping hand. He was a friend to everyone he met, a gentleman whose quiet character earned the respect of all who knew him. A true cowboy at heart, Don lived with humility, integrity, and a genuine love for people, leaving a lasting impression on family, friends, neighbors, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Among those left behind to cherish his memory are his children: Marlin Wilton and wife Patty; Cory Wilton and wife Nyla; and Lee Anne Potter and husband Jody; his stepchildren: Ronald Boyce and friend Loretta Everett; and Michael Boyce and wife Jennifer; his grandchildren: Jessica (Wilton) White and husband Josiah, Michael Wilton, Brady Wilton and wife Elizabeth, Bailey Wilton, Blake Wilton and friend Cheyanne, Emily (Potter) Robinson and husband Graham, and Josie Potter and friend Mason; his step-grandchildren: Kristal Boyce, Kellie Johnson, Alexandria Velders, Emily Pickens, and Jacob Boyce; his great-grandchild, Parker Wilton; his step-great-grandchildren: Scottlin, Tinlee, and Camden; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Wayman Wilton and Thelma Mae (Sheppard) Wilton; his wife, Barbara Lynn Wilton; his wife, Mary Joan “Joann” Wilton; and his sister, Margie Harbour.
Don will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
