He was one of six children, with four brothers and one sister and grew up learning about the value of hard work. He chose his career path one cold early morning while riding in the back of his dad’s pickup truck on the way to a construction site where he earned .50 a day from his dad. He said “I’m not going to do this again!” and decided to attend college at OSU. He earned his bachelor's degree, and then later earned his M.B.A. at Phillip’s University in Enid, Oklahoma. He and Virginia Lee Mathis Hiebert, married on October 19, 1962 in Enid, Oklahoma and during their 59 year marriage, they lived together in Enid, Stillwater, Tonkawa, and Edmond, Oklahoma. Don taught history and coached basketball for Enid Public Schools before moving to Stillwater to work as a Curriculum Specialist at Oklahoma State University. After living again in Enid, they then moved to Tonkawa, Oklahoma where he was a Business Instructor at Northern Oklahoma College and he retired as the Business Division Chairperson.
Their family survived a catastrophic flooding of their home in the early 1970’s by Don and Virginia carrying all four kids across a flooded field before being rescued.
Don was also a farmer/rancher who farmed wheat and raised pigs, chickens and cattle. He grew up during the Great Depression which taught him to be extremely frugal. He could repair just about anything with toothpicks and duct tape, and saved many spare parts “just in case” they were needed down the road.
Don was a natural at being the best Grandpa to all his grandchildren and had a magic touch with his ability to rock babies to sleep. He would do anything for his family, and always made sure they knew how much he loved them. His opinion was sought for many things and he was always sure his opinion was the correct one.
Don is survived by his wife Virginia, daughter Laurie Simpson, son David and wife Lisa Hiebert, daughter Susan and husband Doug Isaacs, and daughter Sherri and husband Anthony Campbell. Grandchildren include Cody Hiebert, Carlye and husband Caleb Hodam, Lawson, Caleb and Weston Isaacs, and Kaleb, Noah, and Hannah Campbell. His brothers and sisters in law remained extremely important to him and he is survived by his brother Marvin and wife Reba, brother Everett and wife Betty, sister in law Lois Hiebert, wife of his brother James, and his brother Vernon as well as many nieces and nephews. He was proceded in death by his parents, his sister Beatrice, brother James, and sister-in-law Kathryn.
