Doris was born to Herbert, a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, and Ruth Henderson, a homemaker, in Cleveland Oklahoma on May 28th, 1925. She was the second oldest of 12 children- her playful wit and kind nature helped her play the rolls of sister and best friend, and probably more than a little extra mothering as well. She was a graduate of Fairfax High School, in Fairfax Oklahoma.
Doris spent many years as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone, where she first encountered her late husband Joe- it is a poorly kept family secret that she fell in love with him listening in to his phone calls while operating the local switchboard. After that she spent many years feeding grateful students in school cafeterias all across Edmond with her made-from-scratch yeast rolls and cinnamon rolls for breakfast and lunch.
Doris was blessed with a large and loving family. Doris raised six children with patience, discipline, love, and a healthy dose of humor. She is survived by her daughters: Pam Hatley and husband Jerry, Karen Tidmore and husband Joe, Valerie Thornton and husband Matt; Her sons: Jeff Kirk and wife Cindy, and Jerry Kirk. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren, and 9 brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband & best friend: Joseph “Joe” Webb, her brothers: Hap and Wayne, her parents, and her son: Charles “Pepper” Kirk.
Doris will be remembered as a wonderful friend, hostess, and cook. There was never a soul who left her home without feeling loved and, frequently, over-fed. While she was also a capable and hard-working career woman, She was truly a mother at heart. Her children loved her dearly and their lives have been a testament to the love and hard work that she poured in to raising them. If she succeeded at anything more than being a mother, however, it was in being a grandmother. She was always available for a word of advice, a favorite meal on demand, a bed to sleep in, or even a room to live in and is still referred to as “Grandma Webb” by many people who are only related by the love they shared for her. She is dearly missed by her loved ones and friends, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace.
Doris' services will be held at Calvary Christian Center at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 6th. Bishop Paul Sharp will officiate the service.
