

Sarah Joanne Cheney, 86, of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026. She was born on August 16, 1939, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Joseph and Mildred (Wylder) Pitts. She married John Allen Cheney on May 17, 1986. She and John spent 40 happy years together. In a previous marriage she had five children. Joanne spent her life creating a warm and welcoming home for those she loved. She was known for her kindness and compassion, faith in God, grace and hospitality, strong work ethic and great sense of humor. She left an indelible mark on the Lawton and Edmond communities. She was a dedicated medical assistant for forty two years at Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma, at Westbrook Family Physicians with Dr. Craig Evans in Edmond, Oklahoma and Cardiologist Dr. Stan Horst of Edmond. She spent her free time gardening, bird watching, conducting genealogy research, and reading. She was a member of the Edmond Republican Women's Club, Edmond Genealogical Society, and Henderson Hills Baptist Church. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family and friends, who will miss her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jim Pitts, and her son Gregory D Lewis Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband, John. Children: Kelly (Dennis) Cole, Kevin (Laurie) Lewis, Kathy (Jerry) Lucy and Cindy (Kenny) White. Grandchildren: Sarah Totte, Heather Mallette, Chase Lucy, Megan Mansfield, Jena Nickell, Anna Vass, Matthew Lewis, Mikel Lewis, Preston Cole and Kenon White. Sister: Virginia (John) Holbird, sister-In-law Sondra Pitts, Niece: Jennifer Holbird, Nephews: Joe and Phil Pitts and 12 great grandchildren. Visitation will be on June 16 at 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Baggerley Funeral Home, Edmond, OK. A celebration of Joanne's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on June 17, 2026, at Baggerley. Graveside service to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, OKC, OK.
