

Joe attended Edmond, Oklahoma schools and graduated from Edmond High School in 1960 and Central State University in 1965. While at CSU, Joe met and married the love of his life, Marilyn Jo Caplinger, and they were married in 1966. Joe was drafted in 1969 into the Army and served overseas in Germany during The Vietnam War. Joe and Marilyn began their careers as educators in Kansas and returned to Oklahoma where Joe’s career as a coach, athletic director, and secondary administrator continued for almost 40 years until his retirement from Ripley in 2000. Joe enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports and other school activities. Joe was always chasing a ball game anywhere he could find one, and was season ticket holder for OSU basketball and football and OKC Thunder for many years. He enjoyed watching MLB from his recliner and listening to country music on the radio by his bed. In his retirement, Joe enjoyed playing pickle ball and golf.
Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn, and their three children: Bill Powell and Rhonda of Yukon, Andy Powell and Kim of Dale, and Mari Pace and Matt of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Jackson of Florida and by several grandchildren: Brett Powell and Alyssa of Piedmont, Kaylee Bermea and Brandon of Stillwater, Taylor Roberts and Nathan of Shawnee, Jordyn Bloomer and Isaac of Seminole, Jayci Powell of Shawnee, Max and Mitchell Pace of Oklahoma City, Jared and Rebekah Jones of Le Mars, Iowa, Haley Jones of OKC, and one great grandchild,Theo Bermea, of Stillwater. Joe was a member of Quail Springs Baptist Church of Oklahoma City where his celebration of life will be held at the Chapel on August 1st at 10:00am. His burial is under the direction of Baggerley funeral home in Edmond, OK.
