James Paul “JP” Lusby II passed away on August 2, 2025, at the age of 54, surrounded by loved ones. Born on September 3, 1970, in Pampa, Texas, JP moved with his family to Oklahoma City at the age of six, where he built a life full of love, faith, family, and purpose.
JP was the beloved son of James and Mardi Lusby. He attended Putnam City Schools and graduated from Putnam City West High School. JP was passionate about sports. From an early age, he began playing football, basketball, and baseball in the Tri-City Little League, continuing them throughout junior high, along with running track. In high school, he concentrated on football and basketball, continuing his football career throughout college.
JP earned a full football scholarship to the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM), where he graduated with a degree in Business and was named to the Dean's List every semester. During his college years, he spent a great deal of time at the home of his Aunt Paula and Uncle Scotty, forging a close bond with them and his cousins, Shannon and Cory.
After completing his undergraduate degree, JP took graduate courses at the University of Oklahoma.
He was known for his love of loud music and sports cars. On October 20, 1995, JP married the love of his life, Velicia Lehman. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two sons, Peyton James (born January 23, 1999) and Trey Christian (born April 17, 2002), who were his pride and joy.
JP enjoyed a successful career as Chief Operating Officer (COO) at the Scott Streller Farmers Insurance Agency. Known affectionately by his friend Scott as the “Quarterback of the agency," JP led with vision and heart. For over 20 years, he served faithfully as a deacon in the church, a reflection of his deep commitment to faith and community.
JP loved the Oklahoma City Thunder, vacations (especially the Bahamas or anywhere in the Caribbean), and playing golf. He and Scott had recently won a golf tournament at Oak Tree just two weeks before his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Watching Thunder games was a beloved pastime, especially with his mother-in-law, Barbara. Often joined by his sports-loving friends, they relished in cheering and analyzing every play! After each win, he would proudly text his parents, "WINNER!" One of his most joyful moments was watching, from the hospital, the Thunder win the World Championship, a joy shared by Velicia, and close friends, Brian and Scott. JP was a devoted family man-sending roses, without fail, to Velicia, his mom, and his mother-in-law for Mother's Day, birthdays, and anniversaries. His thoughtfulness and care in these simple gestures will be dearly missed. He loved planning vacations with precision and a little bougie - always choosing the destination and telling Velicia just to pack and show up. Once everything was booked, he'd excitedly ask over and over, "What's the first thing you're going to do when we get there?" More than anything, JP's life was defined by strength of character. Throughout his life, and especially during the past 11 months, he showed what true compassion, generosity, forgiveness, kindness, and patience look like. Even in the face of unimaginable hardship, he remained calm, strong in his faith and full of hope. He often reminded others, "Don't sweat the things you can't control." When someone recently told him they were sorry he was facing such a battle, he responded with grace and faith: "The battle has already been won. I'd just like to be here a little longer."
JP is survived by his loving wife, Velicia Lusby; Parents, James and Mardi Lusby; Sons, Peyton Lusby and wife Skyla (with grandbaby on the way), and Trey Lusby and wife Tyna; Sister, Terri Sprehe, and husband David; Mother-in-law, Barbara Lehman; Brother-in-law, Jeromy Lehman; Niece, Dallas Sprehe; Nephews, David Sprehe and Dylan Sprehe, and wife Lorraine; As well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his Grandparents, James Paul Lusby and Bobbie Sue Lusby; Grandparents, Franklin Eugene Amos and Sarah Ellen Amos; Father-in-law, Lowell ‘Duane’ Lehman.
JP's warmth, faith, and legacy of love will continue to live on through his family and all those whose lives he touched.
