Merlyn “Mel” Loren Proffitt, Jr. was born in Tulsa, OK on December 8, 1960 and passed away on March 18, 2021.

He is preceded in death by his parents Merlyn Loren Proffitt, Sr. & Bobbie Jo (Ball) Proffitt of Owasso, OK & his beloved cousin Curtis Ray Kimble of Hydro, OK.

Mel is survived by wife Laura Faulk Proffitt (Edmond); son Tanner Proffitt (OKC); step-daughters Quincy Vest (Yukon) & Bailey Daugherty (OKC); brother Nathan Proffitt & wife Jackie (Tulsa); sister Jana Davis (Jenks); 4 grandsons: Mason Proffitt, Hayden Proffitt, Connor Lazzara, & Camden Vest; a host of nieces, nephews, friends, & the Faulk clan (who immediately accepted Mel as family & of which are too numerous to list).

Mel graduated from Nathan Hale HS in Tulsa, OK in 1979. Mel wrestled beginning in grade school & was second in the nation in his weight class in high school. After high school, he proudly attended the Air Force Academy. He worked 30 years as an insurance claims adjuster & was a member of the Oklahoma Claims Association, having one time served as president.

For the past few years, Mel worked for the OKC Dodgers. He loved working with the OKC Dodgers & was one of the best at selling the 50/50 Raffle tickets.

Mel enjoyed playing golf & was an avid bridge player. His mother was a bridge master & Mel taught himself to play bridge as a tribute to her. Mel also served as a volunteer for the MS Walk for Multiple Sclerosis in honor of his mother.

He also served as an usher for nearly 20 years at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church until the past year.

Mel’s favorite restaurant was Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant in Edmond & even convinced Laura to have their wedding reception there. He was saddened by Pepe’s (Julian Gonzalez) death & the subsequent closing of the restaurant.

Mel was a kind, funny, & caring person. He will be remembered for his wit & “dad” jokes, of which there were plenty. Mel will be dearly missed by his family & friends. Laura may or may not miss Mel having complete strangers call her & tell her he was “fine” or “good”.

Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00pm, Friday, March 26 at Baggerley Funeral Home.

Memorial services are pending.

So sorry to hear of Mel’s passing. We worked together for several years and he (and Tanner) were brief roommates for a time. He was a good egg.

I wanted to take this opportunity to express my condolences to the family in the loss of Mel. I worked with him for several years in the insurance industry and he was a kind and genuine person. My prayer is that God will give you all comfort and peace.

I met Mel through the Oklahoma Claims Association and The Oklahoma City Claims Association, where we were both members. Through the years we served on many committees. As a result of that, we became friends. I enjoyed working with him through the years, and seeing him at various conventions and meetings, catching up. I remember how funny he was, as well as his love for PePe’s. All of us who handled insurance claims will miss Mel.

I met Mel in junior HS.  He loved to beat me in wrestling but he was nice enough to never hurt or embarrassed me, ha.  I remember we went to my parent's ranch once and Mel spotted a neighbor's horse, sure enough Mel was able to get on him and we rode him for hours, with no saddle!  That was such a fun day.  Mel caught up w/ me about 6-yrs ago and we met for lunch at his favorite  Mexican Restaurant, Pepe’s.   Mel will be missed, thanks for the memories.   John Mancuso

I met Mel many many years ago while we both worked insurance. Mel was a kind person and did his best to try to make others laugh. I am grateful for the good memories we have. The time we took all the kids went to Florida, Universal Studios, Kennedy Space Center, etc. The times at Pepe’s even when we did not want to go but he convinced us to do it anyway—— , horse back riding and the first time I ever went golfing...... Tanner- I am so very sorry for your loss and Jessica and Julia and I are thinking of you! So sorry for his and her family also. Mel- you will be missed.

Mel and I grew up together, just four doors apart and across the street from each other on 20th Street in Tulsa. We have been friends since we were old enough to play outside. He'd remind me that he was two days older, and he'd joke that we were twins, but I, being nearly a foot taller and more than twice his weight, pushed him out early so I'd have more room. We played little league baseball together and attended school together from kindergarten through high school. He was a loyal and kind friend who loved his entire family. I will miss my friend and brother, our calls and late night conversations, our prayers for each other, and our mutual words of encouragement.

The Gamboa family would like to express our condolences to Mel's family and friends. Mel was always such a warm hearted person to us, was always upbeat anytime we would see him (we always knew to expect his wit anytime we saw him at the stadium).
Our thoughts and prayers go out to both Mel's and Laura's families as they mourn his loss.
