Mike was a man of high moral character. He believed God created the heavens and earth. He believed Jesus was truly the Son of God. He believed Jesus paid the penalty for his sins. He believed at the moment of death that the angels would come and escort him to his eternal heavenly home. That is exactly what happened on June 14, 2022. There he has reunited with his parents; his brothers Phillip and Richard; his "twin-like" sister Joan and her husband, Mike Webb; brother-in-law, Stan Kahn; sisters-in-law, Barbara Pounds, Joyce Thornton, and Marlene Henderson and husband, John.
Mike is survived by his wife Sharon; daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Jeff Weinberg and Stefanie and Jeff Kriet; sons Todd Pierce and Brent Pierce; grandchildren: Ryan McWilliams, Paige Kriet, Allison Pierce, and Chloe Pierce; sister Veronica Kahn; sister-in-law Toni Gravitt; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Jack Castronovo; and brother-in-law Haskell Thornton.
Mike leaves behind many loved nieces and nephews: niece Apryl was always close and ready to help in any way she was asked.
Mike married Peggy Jones in 1966, and that union brought his two cherished daughters, Jennifer and Stefanie.
Mike and Sharon met through mutual friends. Their first date was on January 12, 1980, and they married two months later, on March 7. Although they would not recommend anyone marries in just two months, they felt a true kindred spirit, and it was love at first sight. This marriage brought Mike two sons, Todd and Brent Pierce. The four children bonded and had fun together. Mike and Sharon were blessed with 42 fun years of enjoying each other's company. After being married a few months, while trying to find a parking space in the TG&Y parking lot, Mike told Sharon the real reason he wanted to marry her. He said, "You know why I wanted to marry you; she asked, "Why? " He replied, "Because I can pick my
own parking space. You never tell me where to park.."
Mike was a fun and loving husband and caring, hands-on dad. He was a super papa, always ready to play. He would collect large cardboard boxes so he and Ryan could make and play in a large fort that covered the entire living room floor. This fort would stay there all week. Improvements would be made every evening when Mike got home from work. He would spend the entire day at Frontier City in 100-degree weather and ride every ride with Ryan. Mike and Paige would sit for hours on the floor, playing with the Little Pet Shop. He would never let her know it was killing his back.
However, he wasn't always the "good papa." When Paige was the "Back Yard Garden Tour Guide," he sometimes didn't behave very mannerly. Finally, having enough of his annoying behavior, she dismissed her mom and grams so she could deal with her unruly tourist. Hand on her hip and pointing her finger at him, the discipline started like this; "You have done some good things, and you have done some bad things."
Over and over, he would retrieve headless Barbie and Ken dolls from the large backyard tree. Paige and Ryan would throw them back up in the tree as quickly as he could get them down.
He loved being ornery with the grandkids. He was notorious for making the best malts and lots of them.
Mike had so much fun being the "Patient from Hell" for Doctor Allison's clinic. Expecting her to diagnose the most complicated and unusual illnesses. Some of which he thought he picked up while on a special assignment inspecting the sewers under Oklahoma City. He did apologize for any sewage that might still be on his feet and legs. She freaked out! Doctor Allison and her assistant Chloe would bandage his feet together so he couldn't walk and wrap his head with so many bandages that he couldn't see. Whatever they wanted to do to him in the "name of good medicine," he was game.
Mike was always the bad student, the trouble maker in the many classrooms where Chloe was the teacher. He interrupted the class, raised his hand every other minute with stupid questions, leaned back in his chair, etc. Teacher Chloe had her hands full with this one in her class.
He would "shop till he dropped" in Allison and Chloe's gift shop. Picking up items from all over the house so they could check him out on their cash register. He ate all kinds of questionable entrées at Allison and Chloe's COW CAFÉ.
Mike was close to his four siblings and had crazy fun with them throughout his life.
He loved his job working as The Director of HUD's Community Block Grant Program for The City of Shawnee and the Inspector for the same program for the City of Edmond. He loved helping those who needed grants to improve their homes for their health and safety.
Mike loved working and staying busy. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. He successfully removed walls in 3 homes where he and Sharon lived. He completely renovated a historical home near downtown OKC. For which he was presented a plaque from The Oklahoma Historical Society for that year's best renovation of a small building,
He loved making beautiful sidewalks and pathways with used bricks and rocks. Building retaining walls, fences, and any other idea Sharon came up with for their gardens.
He loved keeping up with politics. He loved reading, especially books on American History.
We will miss his sense of humor. Sharon especially misses her living dictionary. Instead of saying "Hey, Google," all she had to say was "Hey Mike." He always knew the answer.
Mike held and loved others in his heart.
