Paul graduated from Luther High School and attended Central State Teachers College. He worked in the aircraft industry before joining the Army Air Corps. He flew 32 combat missions as a B-17 pilot in World War II, earning several decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross. This was only the beginning of a life of service.
As a USPS Rural Mail Carrier, he delivered mail to rural Luther residents for over two decades, retiring in 1983. He served for decades as a volunteer firefighter and ambulance driver and one term as Mayor of Luther. Throughout this time, Paul also raised cattle and faithfully attended Sooner football games.
Paul was preceded in death by his wives, Martha Engel Vorel (married from 1946 until her death in 1975) and Doris LaVern Tompkins Vorel (married from 1976 until her death in 2018); sisters, Vieva Yoesting and Nieva Munkres; brother, Emil Vorel; and his parents. His life is celebrated by those he leaves behind: daughter, Beth Stetson and her spouse Kathryn Ramsay; daughter, Marsha Root and her spouse David; grandchildren, Tracy Root Beutler and Dr. Gregory Root; three great-grandchildren; beloved nieces and nephews; and Penny, his pup who never left his side.
His family expresses thanks to his Brookdale family, who lovingly cared for him during his final years.
Paul was truly a special man. His bravery and calmness under pressure were matched with kindness and willingness to help anyone in need, as well as a great sense of humor.
