Peter Gerard Ray, age 62, died on Monday morning, August 17, 2020 at his home in Edmond, OK after a fierce battle with pancreatic cancer.

Pete was born in Tulsa, OK on July 18, 1958 to Francis and Katherine (Kelley) Ray. Pete married Vicki Schertz on May 25, 1996 near Monument, KS. Their daughter, Monica was born on September 5, 1997. Pete loved being her Dad.

Pete was full of energy, funny, generous and very determined. He was a hard worker though-out his life, starting with a paper route as a child and hauling hay and taking care of livestock as a teen. Pete was a self-taught mechanical engineer, passing the Professional Engineering exam and receiving his license in 1996. Pete worked at several engineering firms in Oklahoma City, retiring as Assistant Director of Operations from the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center in April of 2020.

Pete was not afraid of any challenge or hard work and spent his spare time fixing everything from vehicles to houses. Pete loved to travel and visited 19 countries, with one of the more meaningful trips being an extended stay in Sri Lanka where he taught English to village children. Pete enjoyed studying cultures and religions of the world looking for the Light in each one. He was continually progressing his spiritual growth with meditation playing a major role in his development.

Pete is survived by his wife, Vicki; their daughter Monica; his sisters, Laurie Ray, Margaret (Randy) Hughes, Mary (Denny) Moffett, Sarah (Ahmad) Niroumand and Lisa (Devon) Brandes; and his brothers, Pat (Sherry) Ray, Kelley (Debra) Ray and Tim (Deirdre) Ray; and his brother-in-law Kelly Killgore. We lost a good man. Our hearts go out to the family and conspicously to Monica and Vicki, as they will have an enormous void to fill.

One of Pete's favorite activities was taking an all day motorcycle ride. It was always a lot of fun and gratifying to make it home in one piece. Pete will be missed!

Our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathies go out to the Ray and Schertz families at this difficult and sad time. Pete was a kind and cheerful person. I know that he had deep love for his family and compassion for others. Monica’s eulogy painted a beautiful picture of and tribute to her amazing father. Sending love and prayers your way. Linda, Fred, Adeline, and Liam Ernst

We are saddened by the loss of Pete. I knew him through our association in work. I was on the Norman Campus and he was at HSC. Also through ASHRAE. Intelligent, talented and fun loving. He will be sorely missed.

I am Vonna Schertz, Pete's mother-in-law. I have so many fond ones of Pete and his family. He loved bringing Monica to our farm. He wanted her to work with the animals and run our big equipment as a learning experience. He encouraged her to learn to drive the tractors and the combines. And now as a young adult she has spent 10 wheat harvests with us driving our combine. Pete was so proud that she could drive a combine with a 36 foot header, not an easy feat!

Pete was a great neighbor. Always willing to help. He was sitting on his front porch one evening and I was trying to get something unloaded from a truck. Even when he was so ill he saw me struggling and offered to come help us. I didn't know he was that ill at the time but told him I think we had it. Now I know he was extremely ill and am amazed that he still offered to help. He was an amazing neighbor!!! Rest in peace Pete. You will be missed my friend.
