Services will be held for Virginia Louise (Day) Scates, Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 11:00 am at Baggerley Funeral Home in Edmond, Oklahoma. The Reverend Marla Lobo will officiate. Virginia was born to Earl Harper Day and Flossie Imogene Mounts on April 27, 1937 in Jones, Oklahoma. She attended school in Jones, Star, and Britton and graduated from John Marshall High School. While she was studying at Central State College she met the love of her life, Julius Scates, and they were married April 19, 1957. With not much money, but a lot of love, Virginia and Julius welcomed their sons Clayton and later David and life for the Scates family was full. The family lived in Oklahoma City, Wichita, Ulysses and Alva, OK and along the way Virginia worked as an office manager and bookkeeper for her husband’s medical office. She was President of the PTO and Mother of the Year in Alva, a PEO sister, and all around terrific Mom. She stood calm in the wake of two young boys and a busy husband and countless dogs, bunnies and reptiles. Eventually the family settled in Edmond, OK and Virginia returned to Central State University to finish her Bachelor of Science in Business. She served as a volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital, worked as an office manager at a nursing home, was active in the FH chapter of PEO, and enjoyed her life with her neighbors, friends and family. In time, she became the VERY proud grandmother of five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005. In recent years she was a member of Leland Clegg Memorial United Methodist Church serving as Finance Secretary and Treasurer, was a member of a Post Adjudication Review Board, enjoyed her water and “land” aerobics classes, shared traveling adventures with her sister Bobbi and friend Terry, and enjoyed the Orchestra League and countless outings with her dear friend Janice. A crossword puzzle or cryptaquote was never far from her hand and she was always ready with a story about her grandchildren. Her family loved her and adored her spirit and determination.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and brother-in-law Bill Clarkson. She is survived by her sister Barbara Clarkson, Allen, TX; her son Clayton Scates and Lesli Scates, Edmond, OK; son Dr. David Scates and Madeline Kim Scates of Granite Bay, CA; grandchildren Austin, Emily and Benjamin Scates of Granite Bay, CA; Caleb Scates of Austin, TX; Cassidy Scates and John Flottman of Edmond, OK and many other family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. Services entrusted to the care of Baggerley Funeral Home of Edmond. www.baggerley.com
