Barry Philip Bates of Edmonton, AB passed away at the age of 76 on June 29. 2025. Born in Rivers, MB on the 26th of August, 1948 to parents John Lowry Bates and Marie Adella Bates (Nee: Krawzuk) is survived by: his son Brock Bates of Edmonton, his sister Noreen Noble of Oak Bay, B.C. and brother Doug Bates of Salmon Arm, B.C.
Barry grew up the son of an Air Force Captain and lived in most parts of Canada, Washington D.C., Panama City Florida in the U.S.A. and Metz France. After graduating from High School in Kamloops, B.C. he joined the R.C.M.P., following the footsteps of his brother Doug in 1971.
After training in Regina he was posted to Alberta. During his service he was stationed at Fairview, Blairmore, St. Albert and H.Q. in Edmonton. During his time in St. Albert he had the unique situation of being at the same Detachment as his brother for a short period of time. Barry then took on the role of Division Composite Artist working out of H.Q. and assisting with drawings for the Edmonton Police Service as well. His facial drawings were exceptional and helped solve many cases. He retired from service in 1988.
In his youth he enjoyed the great outdoors and playing numerous sports at the Air Force bases his father was stationed at. He was very mechanically gifted and developed a love for cars. After his retirement his passion for classic cars led him to join the Mainstreet Cruisers of Edmonton and later co-found the St. Albert Cruisers Car Club in the mid 1990s. He spent many hours tinkering with his own classic cars and met many other like minded people over the years, creating lasting friendships and cherished memories.
He touched the hearts and lives of many during his years and will be sadly missed.
