My sweetest Derek. I wanted to write something on here yesterday but didn't have the strength. I was driving home from work and a Dave Matthews song came on. He was one of your favorite singers. I felt your presence. I miss you so much Derek.

Princess Derek with the painted nails, known for your heart & soul, your quiet greatness & humility, your decency , strength, & goodness, the love you gave so freely through action more than words, your joy of living and deep devotion to your children, your friends, your family. I am so proud of you my love. You rocked this world with your heart of gold!!

I'm missing you so much Derek. My heart hurts every day. I hope you're smiling up there in heaven.

Derek was a huge part of our life during my teen years and I have fond memories of rollerblading, biking, listening to music and hanging out with Derek. My warmest thoughts are going to his family.

Derek coached my daughter in her first year of novice hockey in the girls league. He made it such a great season for her. She was looking forward to having him as a coach again. He was quiet but had a look that would put all the girls in their place if they started getting a little too crazy. He was a great guy.

I'll miss this guy. He was fun to play hockey with, even though he was always looking for someone as big as him to chow down on. Never someone smaller. Derek coached our daughter in hockey for her 3 years.  We always appreciated the encouragement he gave and the effort he made to push her to improve.  Our sincere condolences to Maureen, Nathan and Ava.  We are truly sorry for your loss and hope that you are all able to find peace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gill family.  Derek and  I coached our Daughters together, he was fantastic with the girls and a pleasure to coach with.  We will always remember the wonderful time we all had together when we went to Canmore for a tournament...Derek had broken his foot, it never stopped him from being on the bench and being with the girls...he even let them paint his nails! We are saddened to hear the passing of Derek.  Although we had only just begun our friendship with Derek and his family through Girls Hockey a few years back, he was a tremendous coach and mentor to our daughter.  They had a fun and special bond, which meant so much to her.  She even created a special nickname for him - princess.  

You could see that he was a wonderful father and loved his children so much.  We will miss seeing him at the rink and on the ice.  Our thoughts & prayers are with you through this difficult time.

Derek will be remembered by the Kingston family  for his kindness and dedication while coaching Joel for 2 years.   He always took the time to connect with Joel and made him feel like an important part of the team.  Our prayers go out to Maureen, Nathan and Ava.
