Doreen Jane Szewczuk

October 12, 1938 – November 15, 2011

With great sadness, the family of Doreen Szewczuk announces her unexpected passing on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 in Rich Valley, AB at the age of 73 years. Doreen was a long time resident of Barrhead, AB and vicinity, her grandparents, Frank D. and Flora (Koch) Thompson being pioneers in the area. Doreen grew up on a farm west of Barrhead where she enjoyed horseback riding, singing, and playing the guitar. After high school, she worked for Canada Packers and then at the Barrhead Co-op before marrying Jess Szewczuk in 1963, after meeting at a country dance. They ran the Good Year Tire Shop in Swan Hills, AB for 13 years until 1976, when they moved to a farm in Cherhill, AB, where they lived until they retired in Barrhead. Doreen enjoyed travelling, rockhounding, drawing and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Joanne Szewczuk and Maxine (Brian) Chayka; her son, Wayne Szewczuk; her grandchildren, Tyler, Jordan, Katelynn and Haylee; brothers, Richard, Darrell and Lloyd; and many cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada, England and the USA. Doreen was predeceased by her husband, Jess in 2005; her parents, George Brucker and Ethel (Bramley) Thompson; and her sister, Laura Tywoniuk.

A visitation and reception in Doreen’s Honour was held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 3:30 pm. A private family inurnment will be at Poynter Cemetery at a later date.

Donations are gratefully accepted in Doreen’s memory directly to the Alberta/NWT Lung Association (PO Box 4500 Stn S, Edmonton, AB T6E 6K2) or to a local charity of one’s choice.

The family of Doreen would like to send a special thank you to Theresa and Vern Frizzel for the care and love they provided to Doreen during this past year.
