Emiliana Oriarte Dela Torre, also known as “Mameng,” was a loving and dedicated wife to her husband Jerome, and to their seven children, Jocelyn, Edwin, Susan, Nonie, Arnel, Glenda, and Alan. She has 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, most of whom are overseas in the Philippines and the Middle East. Mameng was born February 8, 1938 in Guinobatan, Albay, Philippines and peacefully passed at Norwood Care Center in Edmonton, Alberta on June 23, 2022. Mameng was 84 years old.
She was a committed housewife and homemaker and lived in the Philippines for most of her life until she was widowed in May 1998 and immigrated to Canada in January 2001 with the help of her eldest child and daughter, Jocelyn Carabeo, and became an integral part of her son-in-law’s family. While in Canada, Mameng would make some pocket money cooking and selling her delicious suman, ginataan laing, puto, among other Filipino foods. She was very fond of vintage music, always playing songs from the 1950s and 1960s, first on her retro radio, then eventually, her iPad, even in her final days. Mameng also loved to crochet and would make many different items ranging from sweaters and vests, to table cloths and blankets.
Mameng was a positive and kind woman to everyone she met. She was a lighthearted individual, always with a smile on her face. These qualities will be forever remembered as her family and friends keep her spirit alive in their hearts.
