A Tribute to Ethel (TDE — “That Darn Ethel”)

I had the privilege of working with Ethel for many years in Edmonton, and I will always remember her as one of the most joyful, creative, and feisty spirits I’ve ever known. Long past the age when most writers would have retired, Ethel never lost her spark. She carried her love of writing — and of life — with a brightness that made every room lighter.

At West Edmonton Mall, she’d often round the corner to my desk with a mischievous smile and say, “Let’s sneak out for a coffee and a cinnamon bun.” Those small moments, shared over warm cups and sweeter conversation, remain some of my fondest memories.

She was the first to stand up and say, “That’s not right!” — a fierce defender of fairness and decency. A friend you could count on. A firebrand with flaming red hair and a heart to match. We affectionately called her TDE — That Darn Ethel — a nickname born of love, admiration, and her ability to stir things up just when they needed stirring. After her hip replacement, my buddy Scotty even added, “with a Texas twist,” which made her laugh.

Ethel was a writer, a friend, a fighter, and a joy to know.
The world is a little dimmer without her in it, but so many of us carry her spark forward.

Rest well, dear Ethel.
And thank you — for the laughter, the mischief, the courage, and the cinnamon buns.
