In 1935, Gurbachan Kaur became the firstborn of Tej Kaur and Bhagat Singh. She grew up in a small village called Kangniwal, just outside Jalandhar, Punjab, India. She remembered fondly of her younger days where she helped her parents raise her 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
Gurbachan married in the early 1950s to Udham Singh Kang and moved to the village of Lallian Kalan. There she began her life with her husband who also had 4 younger brothers and 2 sisters. She felt right at home caring for her new family before starting her own.
Her oldest son Bakshish was born in 1953, followed by Gurbaksh, Amarjit, Surinder, Tarlochan and Kulwinder who all survive her. After having children she emigrated to Canada with her husband and 3 youngest to join Bakshish in Edmonton. She worked for a few years picking blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries before returning to her true calling raising children.
Her grandchildren call her “Bibi”, a loving term for grandma adopted by everyone including her children. Everyone that knew her simply called her “Bibi”. She loved to cook, working in the kitchen all day to make lunches, dinners, and desserts. Often going out of her way to make everyone happy through her cooking!
Bibi did experience hardships in her long life. She came to this country in 1984 with her family and created a life from nothing through determination and hard work. 10 years later she was diagnosed with cancer in 1994 and recovered a short time after. Her recent years have seen her physical health deteriorate but her mind remained just as sharp, ultimately her body succumbed to time.
We remember our “Bibi” as someone we could always come to for a sympathetic ear. She loved all of her children and grandchildren but more than that they all knew it. We will miss our Bibi but the memories she created with all of us will last forever!
