It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the sudden passing of Harold Benkendorf on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at the age of 72 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Erika, his children Cara (Jason) Kirkey, Scott Benkendorf, and Brian (Lianne) Benkendorf, five grandchildren Liam, Callum, Brennan, Bradley and Chloe, sister Maggie (Bryan) White Gourlie as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by his parents Toni and Ida Benkendorf and his brother Gunther.
Harold was born in Edmonton, on September 28th, 1952. He spent his earlier years growing up and attending school in Hazeldean and Petrolia neighborhoods, before moving on to later attend the University of Alberta, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He married his longtime sweetheart Erika in 1973 and they continued to call Edmonton home, where they purchased a house and raised their three children. To provide for the family, Harold’s career ranged from working as a tax accountant for the CRA, to running the painting business founded by his father. Harold loved the outdoors, feeling a sense of peace in nature, with particular passions for fly-fishing, canoeing, and gardening.
In 1992, Harold was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He struggled with his disease for many years, but it did help him discover his love (and talent!) for cooking and sharing amazing meals with his family. From 2011-2013, Harold was fortunate enough to receive four islet cell transplants which aided his management of diabetes and improved his quality of life. In his final years, he battled heart disease and strokes.
Throughout, Harold never complained and taught us all what is really important in life; to love, support, and care for family and friends unconditionally. We are all better off for having known him. Even though he is gone now, his legacy will live on in all of us.
A Memorial Service will be held on March 17th, at 2:00pm, at Hainstock's Funeral Home, 9810 34 Ave NW.
