July 26, 1928 - January 15, 2026
It is with heavy hearts, we share the peaceful passing of Irene Goff (née Smith), age 97 on Thursday, January 15, 2026, surrounded by family and much love. Mom was greeted into heaven by her loving husband of 59 years, Raymond, and beloved son David.
Mom was born on July 26, 1928, in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire England. At a young age, Mom and Dad met at the Palais De Dance, and were married on August 21, 1948.
With hopes of a brighter future, Dad and his two brothers-in-law immigrated to Canada from England in 1950. Soon to follow was Mom, her two sisters-in-law, and two nieces in the spring of 1951. Mom and Dad resided in both Edmonton and Saskatchewan, before moving to
St. Albert in 1960, where they built a home and raised their family.
Mom excelled in her primary role of wife, mother, grandmother, GG, and was a friend to all. Although, she loved baking, cooking, knitting, reading, and music, Mom’s ultimate favorite things to do were singing and dancing! In their younger years Mom and Dad spent many hours ballroom dancing and entertaining friends and family. Whenever possible, Mom attended her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s many activities with much pride and joy. Along with over 50 foster children, we grew up in a home full of love.
Although we mourn her passing, Mom’s love and values have given us all a firm foundation and her legacy will live on in our hearts forever.
Left to cherish Mom’s memory are her loving daughters Sharon and Wendy (Wayne), her daughter-in-law Jacquie (Brent), grandchildren Shannon, Sandra-Lyn (Shawn), Sean (Kim), Rae-Anne (Kyle), Christine (Matt), Laura and Raymond; great-grandchildren, Kara, Mackenzie, Owen, Nolan, Gabriella and Mason as well as many relatives and dear friends in England, Canada and around the world.
In addition to her beloved husband Ray, and dear son David, Mom was predeceased by her parents Florence (née Straw) and Arthur Smith, mother and father-in-law Harriet Ann and William Goff, 12 brothers and sisters, grandson Stuart, and many relatives in England.
Our family wish to thank Mom’s many care aides, nurses, and allied health care professionals who provided excellent care over the years to Mom in her home, at the Adult Day Program at the Sturgeon Hospital, and at Venvi River Ridge before moving to Foyer Lacombe. A very special thank you goes out to Dr. Ben Macedo, along with the nursing and support staff at Foyer Lacombe for their utmost care and compassion given to Mom during her final days. Your dedication and kindness will always be remembered.
Mom loved butterflies, so the next time you see one, think of Mom and smile.
And as Dad used to sing to her, “Good night Irene, Good night Irene, I’ll see you in my dreams…”
A Celebration Of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Mom requested donations be made in her name to the Ronald McDonald House at 7726-107 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 4K3 Canada or on their website at www.ronaldmcdonaldhousealberta.org
