It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce to you the passing of our dear Jagjit Kaur Passi, of Edmonton Alberta, Canada, on June 18, 2022. She spent her final hours holding the hand of her loving husband, Kuldip Singh Passi.
Jagjit was born to Sardar Amrik Singh and Mrs. Bindra Devi Nayyer in Gujranwala, Punjab, India, before that country’s partition into India and Pakistan. She spent most of her youth in Jalandhar, Punjab, and earned a BA from Hans Raj Mehla College and a BEd from both Government Training College and The University of Alberta. From there, she took the brave step to migrate across the globe to northern Alberta. She joined her brothers Sat Paul and Jatinder and cousin Dharam in working as a schoolteacher in small communities in northern Alberta. The contributions of these bold immigrants to rural Alberta communities in the mid- to late 20th century were treasured by the immigrants and residents alike.
Arranged by their respective parents, Jagjit met her loving husband, Kuldip, in Edmonton by him migrating there from England in 1968. They married and settled in Edmonton on June 22nd of that year. Loving son Anil was born one year later, and dear Arun was born four and a half years after that. Jagjit, along with her family, was an active member of the South Edmonton community for many years, including the Erminskine Child Care Centre and Sukhmani Sahib Path Group.
We remember Jagjit— as daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, auntie, dear friend, and teacher—as a kind and compassionate soul and will greatly miss her warm and devoted nature and smile. Her friends in her Path Group will miss her dedication and genuine love and faith.
Jagjit is survived by her immediate family, loving husband Kuldip, son Anil, grandson Sameer, and granddaughter Savita. Very sadly, she lost her other loving son Arun only a few months ago, in February 2022. Jagjit is also survived by her brothers Avtar (Raj Rani) and Jatinder (Shushma), and sister Surjit (Inderjit). She was predeceased by her dear brothers Sat Paul (Santosh) and Pratap Singh (Pritpal) and her sister Manjit (Joginder Singh). She is also survived by brothers-in-law Krishan Lal (Prem), and Raj Singh (Kanta), and sisters-in law Pushpa (Ranjit), and Prabha (Sunit). She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews: Surina, Rajinder aka Bubby (Harvinder aka Pinky), Nimmi (Rajiv), Anita (Ross), Kim (Bob), Deepak (Francine), Nisha (Harvey), Sonia (Gurmit), Mona (John), Bunty (Shelley), Sunil (Seema), Rajesh (Bharti), Sangeeta (Shiv), Rajinder (Jessie), Varinder (Nicki), Manish (Praju), Neeraj (Danielle), Sonia, and Sheetal, and is predeceased by niece Maninder (Narinder).
Funeral will be held at 2 pm on Monday, June 27th at Hainstock's Funeral Home and Crematorium 9810 34th Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Change For Children (changeforchildren.org) or Edmonton’s Food Bank (edmontonsfoodbank.com) re. Jagjit Passi Memorial Fund.
