With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph Nicholas Petrone at the age of 79, after a brief and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He is the beloved husband of Karen, and a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Joe is predeceased by his parents, Rosina and Severino; his brothers, Mike and Luigino; and his sister, Rose. He is survived by his brother, Tony (Val). He leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and passion in the lives of his five loving children: Shawna (Chris), Jodie (Gage), Paula (Kent), Josh, Megan (Jeff), 12 beautiful grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Montagano, Italy, Joe and his family came to Canada in 1958 and he grew up playing soccer with the Ital-Canadian soccer team and went on to represent Canada at the Pan-American games in 1967. After graduating from St. Joe's High School, he played with the Edmonton Wildcats as a quarterback and placekicker. He followed this with a full scholarship to Idaho State University. He then attended the University of Calgary and played football for the Dinos. In 1970 he transferred to the University of Alberta to play football, and completed the B.Ed Degree. In 1971, after getting married to the love of his life, Karen, his football talent earned him a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys. Following several years of teaching high school with Edmonton Catholic Schools, he earned his Master's Degree at Eastern Illinois University in 1975.
A true legend in the world of sport, his life's work was dedicated to the game he loved - soccer. Joe was involved in almost every professional soccer team in Edmonton's history and will be remembered as a foundational builder and enduring steward of the various pro teams. His relentless passion and vision for pro soccer in Edmonton changed the lives of countless young players through his leadership and belief in their potential. He cared deeply about the story of soccer in Edmonton and was a tireless advocate in the community. Football and soccer were not just games to him - they were a way of life and he lived that life with heart, purpose, and a dedication that transcended sport.
Through this passion he raised strong and capable children and inspired his grandchildren to chase their dreams and never give up. This passion was also evident during his 30 years of teaching at St. Mary's and Holy Trinity High Schools, inspiring young adults to work hard, stay focused, and have a great attitude.
We will always remember his love, his generosity, and the quiet strength he brought into every room. He was a man who gave his all - to his family, his community, and to the game. His impact will live on for generations.
Joe was a fierce advocate for his son Josh's participation in the St. Albert Special Olympics. In lieu of flowers, we are accepting donations to the St. Albert Special Olympics so that legacy can live on. To make a donation, e-transfers can be made to [email protected] password is petrone.
