It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Kathy Owella Soldan who passed away on February 24, 2024, at the age of 70.
Being the optimistic “tough old bird” she was, Kathy was determined not to let her lung and brain cancer diagnosis keep her from enjoying life to the fullest. She even delayed her craniotomy to celebrate her 70th birthday with those people in her life she cherished.
Kathy was predeceased by the love of her life, Claude Yvon Roy, as well as her parents, Jean and Harry Soldan. She is survived by her two sisters: Anita Soldan (Grant Dawkins) and Debby Soldan, as well as her brother, Michael Soldan (Noreen); her nieces and nephew: Jennifer Roach (Ben), Kelsey Soldan, Kimberly Samuel (Zaid), and Ryan Soldan (Manuela), and her two great-nieces, Via Samuel and Sophia Soldan; her stepson, Kent Sayers (Bailey), and her two step-grandsons, Jaxton and Hudson Sayers. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
Kathy ran the family business, Soldan Fence and Metals Ltd., in partnership with her brother, Michael, after the passing of their father. She loved riding and grooming her horses, walking her dogs, and camping with her RV. Being outside on a beautiful day was one of her favourite things to do, along with spending time (and even a glass of wine!) with friends and family.
As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations to the organizations, Haying in the 30’s Cancer Support Society or the Roozen Family Hospice Centre (Pilgrims Hospice Society) would be greatly appreciated. Haying in the 30’s (https://www.hayinginthe30s.com/) surprised Kathy during the course of her cancer treatments with assistance in accommodation and transportation costs, and the Roozen Family Hospice Centre (https://pilgrimshospice.com/) was instrumental in making sure Kathy remained comfortable during her final days.
Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute who all contributed to the care of Kathy throughout her journey.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will take place on March 10, 2024 at 2 pm at Hainstock’s Funeral Home 9810-34 Avenue, Edmonton.
