It is with great sadness that we, her daughters, share that our beloved mother, Leeanne McMeckan, has left us to join her beautiful husband and all her loved ones who have gone before her. Leeanne passed away peacefully and without pain at home in Edmonton, AB on March 24, 2026 at the age of 85 years. We were blessed to have been able to spend time with her before she passed, and mum was not alone when she died. This is a privilege denied to many of us left behind, and it is a gift in death that we will cherish as much as we cherished her in life.
Leeanne was predeceased by her husband Bill, her mother Zena, stepfather Ken, and brothers Wayne and Russell. Remembering her with joy and love for all she brought to her family and friends are her daughters Deborah Marie Currie (Sean) and Christine Zena McMeckan, her stepsister Lynn, as well as many other relatives, friends, and neighbours.
Mum was a talented artist and gardener. Anything she could nurture and grow, she would try. There was also no artistic project she wouldn’t take a run at. Whether it was crocheting everything from blankets to toys, or making beautiful ceramic pieces for our home, or sewing beautiful clothes for her family, she was happiest when she was immersed in creative exploits. She also dabbled in quilting for a time and had a talent for it that, had she been able to continue, could have built a cottage industry from sales of her beautiful works. In the last decade of her life, mum spent hours in her colouring books to add colour to her home and world. Her completed works adorned the halls of her Assisted Living complex for years prior to moving to Long Term Care.
Mum was an amazing woman who not only took care of her sweet husband, she raised her girls to be independent, capable, loving and empathetic. She celebrated and encouraged independent living and thinking, and we are truly grateful. Facing many challenges throughout her life, she taught us that care for others and always being able to care for ourselves were priorities we must nurture. She loved her friends dearly and her favourite memories and stories involved her Air Force friends, “The Three M’s”, and her community of friends in Beverly where they lived for 40 years.
We want to take a moment to highlight the wonderful care our mum received at Edmonton’s Jubilee Lodge by all the staff – every last one of them. Her last years in Long Term Care were made infinitely better by the dedication, empathy, encouragement, and unwavering commitment to her happiness. Mum flourished there and even in her most challenging moments of confusion and pain, she was supported by these beautiful caregivers. Our family is beyond grateful to them for ensuring her final years were dignified and peppered with great moments of joy.
A small service will be held when the flowers she loved so much spring up and details will be shared at that time.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Jubilee Lodge Nursing Home at 10333 76 Street, Edmonton, AB. In a province where its government is starving our healthcare and elder care support systems, any donation you can provide will be greatly appreciated and used to make the lives of our seniors better.
