It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Colleen McGeough, lovingly known as Maggie among her family, friends and colleagues. Maggie was a tireless worker and champion for others. Graduating from Concordia College in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, she began a career in social services and touched the lives of many. Maggie was a proud Indigenous woman and practiced her traditions and worked towards making a difference within the many communities she belonged to. As an avid beader and craftsperson she founded her business, Heart of the Woods. Through her employment at Metis Child and Family services in Edmonton, she became involved with the Elizabeth Fry Society’s Indigenous women’s program in Northern Alberta. Maggie was a founding member of the Red Road Healing Society and served on the Native Youth Justice Commission in the 1990s. She also volunteered her time to the Dreamcatcher Youth Conference. In 2006, Maggie moved to Ft. McCleod, to work for Southern Alberta Community Living where she worked with adults with developmental disabilities. Maggie also served as the Vice President of CUPE local 4791.
Most importantly Maggie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend. She is survived by her daughters Robyn McGeough (Jason Pollock) of Edmonton, Jill Hackney (Matt) of Waldeck, Saskatchewan, siblings Phillip Barry McGeough of Sylvan Lake, Maureen McGeough (Lorraine) of Edmonton, Michelle McGeough (Diana) of Montreal, nephew Phillip Kenneth McGeough (Crystal) of Whitecourt, grandniece Hayley Morin of Vancouver/Edmonton, granddaughter Anna-May Gadwa of Edmonton, and grandsons Maverick and Stephan Hackney of Waldeck. She will be missed by her friends and large extended family.
She is predeceased by her mother Margaret Jeanette McGeough, her father Felix Gerald McGeough and nephew Clinton Ernest McGeough.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Roozen Family Hospice Centre 9808-148 St. NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 3E8, in memory of Maggie. The family will be planning a celebration of her life at a later date.
