Nicholas Egerton Sackey, 78, of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away on February 24th, 2025.
Nicholas (Nick) was born in Sekondi, Ghana on September 12th,1946 to mother Agnes Morris and father Joseph Egerton Sackey. He was the ninth of ten brothers and sisters.
He completed his studies in college in 1972 and began working for the Agricultural Development Bank of Ghana. He then came to Canada to pursue a Masters Degree in Agriculture at the University of Alberta.
Nick met his wife, Jennifer Sackey, in Edmonton in 1975. They married on November 13th, 1976. Nick and Jennifer went on to have three children: Ama Sackey Balogun, Ahema Hutchins, and Julie Sackey Forbes. Nicholas was a loving father and husband. He began his career in Canada working for Alberta’s Department of Agriculture for 7 years and later moved on to working at the Royal Bank of Canada for 15 years. He retired from the Royal Bank to pursue an interest in becoming a carpenter. He received his Journeyman Certificate and began working as a carpenter and a scaffolder in Edmonton and around Alberta until retirement.
During his lifetime, he was known for his generosity and willingness to help his community. His philanthropic efforts included being a board member of the Ghana Friendship Association and Trincan Steel Orchestra; both of which he helped to establish as non-profit organizations. He assisted many programs that fostered the cultural and educational development of youth. He also helped foster the integration of youth with developmental disabilities into the community.
His passions included spending time with his family, friends, volunteering, playing trumpet and performing with the steel band. He enjoyed good food, company, and music that reminded him of home.
He is deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
