Russ left school at an early age to help on the family homestead and he also apprenticed in a Blacksmith shop where he developed his life-long work ethic. When he moved West, he was employed as a farm hand then worked with metal as an ironworker. Part of his legacy is in the construction of the (now closed) Edmonton Coliseum and the High Level Bridge in Edmonton, Alberta. Over his lifetime Russ was the ultimate entrepreneur. He had many business endeavors over the years. His custom cedar shingle roofing company and the relationships he developed with the builders and contractors, was his absolute pride and joy! Russ continued running his roofing crews right up until he turned 80 when his health no longer allowed for him to continue to do so.
Russ and Evelyn (Johannesen) had 4 children together.
