On April 9, 2022 heaven gained an earthly angel. Our dear beautiful mom finally attained the peace she so deserved after suffering immensely for over 14 years from what was diagnosed as dementia. May she rest well in the afterworld from now until eternity in the loving embrace of her beloved husband of 51 years, our dear Dad, Kenny Askin. Sandy has and continues to be mourned deeply by her two devoted daughters: Holly (Greg) Mailo, Ginger (Darrell) Friesen, and her four cherished grandchildren: Hunter, Harleigh, Hope, and Sadie. Sandy is predeceased by her husband, Kenny Askin, her loving mom Marian Newman, her dad, James Richardson, and by her brother Ricky Richardson. Sandy dedicated over 25 years of service to the Edmonton Catholic School Division as an elementary school secretary and as a teacher’s aide. She was a devoted wife, a selfless mother, a proud grandma, a wonderful daughter, a fabulous sister and sister in law, a caring cousin, a generous auntie, a thoughtful niece, a hardworking employee, a supportive colleague, a committed volunteer, a loyal friend, and an incredibly kind and compassionate gentle soul. Sandy leaves behind an amazing legacy of love. Family was her first love and number one priority. She spent decades as a sensational hostess, hosting friends and family at her lake cabin at Seba beach as well as countless family dinners, talent nights, celebrating any and every occasion that life had to offer. She was known for her positive outlook on life, her love of children, her infatuation with Elvis, her infectious laugh, her crazy toy poodles, her elegance and grace, her sense of style, her fantastic sense of humor, and her strong sense of morality. Tragically, the continuing care system in our province deeply failed Sandy on every level from her diagnosis until her death. Despite a clear personal directive, an inherent disconnect exists between medicine and law. This disconnect prevented her wishes which were to be kept comfortable from being honoured. Much work must be done to bridge this gap so that no one else will ever have to endure the suffering Sandy was forced to.
We love you forever mom xo
