We were so sorry to hear of Norman's passing.  We have fond memories of him attending many Les Amies Dinner/Dances.  On behalf of all the members of Les Amies Dance Club, we want to extend our condolences to his family and say how much we will miss visiting with Norman and seeing him on the dance floor. I got to know Norman while we studied together as undergraduates in the Physics Department at the University of Alberta.  Our paths diverged in graduate school when he pursued theoretical physics in Toronto and I chose experimental in Hamilton.  Still, we maintained communication with each other.  As Christmas was approaching and with our financial circumstances at the time we agreed to save money by sharing the cost of gas on the long drive back to Edmonton.  To save both time and hotel bills we drove day and night in my already ancient Envoy Epic.  As we entered Saskatchewan in minus 30C temperatures the car's heater quit.  To make matters worse, the no-drafts had to be kept open to prevent ice from forming on the inside of the windscreen.  We completed the trip bundled in all of our winter gear.  

It is a testament to Norman's resilience that not only did he survive that trip, but he also agreed to the return passage, which was also fraught with automobile difficulties.  It is a bit surprising, but an indication of his nobility that even after suffering such a trip with me he was still willing to maintain our friendship.

Much later Norman spent a few years in Calgary where I also was living.  We used to get together then with a few other colleagues quite regularly for pasta lunches at a local Italian restaurant.  Norman was most often the driving force organizing these luncheons.  Our meetings were always pleasant and conversations, while always congenial, were often in a technological language that might have been incomprehensible to anyone eavesdropping.  And after lunch we could always depend on Norman to scan the bill, quickly do the mental arithmetic, and report what each of us owed.

When Norman returned to Edmonton our communications became less frequent but we would still see each other on the rare occasions when I was in Edmonton and our schedules would permit.  More than once he hosted me and my wife at the Faculty Club, always a pleasant experience.

I am very saddened by Norman's passing.  He will certainly be missed.  I send my sincere condolences to the family.

I first met Norman in 1972 when he returned from Toronto as a graduate student in General Relativity.  I had just moved from the Mathematics Department into the Physics Department and had the same supervisor, Werner Israel.  Later after his Ph.D.  Norman received another degree in computing.  Following this degree Norman received an AOSTRA Post Doctoral fellowship and at that time we worked together for three years on applications of non linear field theory, to fluid flow and seismic wave propagation in the earth.  After this fellowship ended Norman's computational skills resulted in the new Chairman, Ernie Kanasewich, hiring him as a research associate to work on Seismology for four years.  Norman then spent the next six and a half years in industry as a systems analyst and software developer.  At that time I had recently cofounded a new company (currently Wavefront Technology Solutions) with Brett Davidson and Maurice Dusseault.  Brett the CEO hired Norman to work with me on the physical processes and applications related to the patents held by the company.  For the last fifteen years of his life we worked closely together and had begun a new physics book on applications of the non linear field theory we had worked on to processes in composite and porous media.  Norman's computational abilities and knowledge of physics will be missed in the last year of this books completion.  Norman was a good friend, who handled the last two and a half years knowing of his cancer with such optimism and bravery that he has set an example for us all.

I'm so sorry to hear about Norman's passing  I danced with him at Foot Notes and always found him to be such a kind, soft-spoken, and thoughtful gentleman ... and a very accomplished dancer.

I was very sorry to hear to hear this sad news. Norman was one of my first grad students. I remember him with great fondness, though we haven't been in touch for many years.
