It is with deep sadness we announce that on January 24th, 2025 the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Swapon Banerjee Lall. A dedicated family man who was loved by so many for his loving calm demeanour and his ability to enjoy life. Survived by his beloved wife Rama (Jhumu) and son Shauvick (Babie). Along with his four precious grand kids whom he loved dearly, Syon, Tej, Damon, and Veda.
Swapon was born in India in 1940. After completing his degree from the University of Pune in India he started his work as a medical representative with Abbott Laboratories. In 1969 he joined his father and brothers in Canada. Soon after he continued with his further studies at the university of Regina while keeping his vowing to go back to India within one year to marry the love of his life,Jhumu. They were honestly two of the greatest lovers of all time. Imagine young Jhumu a beautiful girl being noticed by this stylish, suave guy who had just returned from studying abroad in 1970. They said that they had a puppy love and that it wouldn’t last. Well- That puppy love turned into a partnership that lasted 54 years. They raised a wonderful, funny and loving son, Shouvik, aka Babie. They watched him grow into a successful business man, became proud grandparents, and weathered all of life’s ups and downs together.
Swapon’s love and dedication weren’t just limited to his family. He was a hardworking man who since 1970’s spent 35 years with CN. He had this aura of calm contentment—like he’d unlocked the secret to a happy life. He was legendary for his amazing cooking and his culinary skill for cooking goat curry. He wasn’t just in the kitchen to help or cook; he made it look cool, like being a calm and collected chef was his superpower. Many will remember him in the kitchens for the Edmonton Bengali Association whipping up food for gatherings, chatting with everyone, and making you feel like you were the most important person in the room. As a founding member of the Edmonton Bengali Community he was undoubtedly everyone’s favourite chef, friend and uncle/ kaku.
Swapon was also the ultimate dad. He loved hanging out with his son Babie. His son was his greatest pride and joy. He was the kind of dad who made one feel like you could take on the world because he was always in your corner, quietly cheering you on. He was also the most doting grandfather. He talked about Syon, Tej and Damon like they were kings on earth. And no one can deny his soft spot for his little Veda.
It will be hard to imagine Swapon/ Dad/ Da/ Uncle/ Kaku /Grandpa no longer among us. However he will live forever with in our memories. He was the steady, calm presence in a world that can sometimes feel chaotic. But if there’s one thing we know, it’s that the love and memories he created will live on. Jhumu’s light, confidence, and beauty were magnified by his love, and we know she’ll carry that with her always. Shauvick, Babie’s generosity and kindness to others will remain a reflection of himself. The success of all four of his wonderful grandchildren, Syon, Tej, Damon and Veda will be a continuation of his own hard work.
Thank you for sharing this life with all of us. Your kindness, humor, and love touched so many of our lives, and will never be forgotten.
