December 24, 1939 – October 1, 2019
Vera was born December 24, 1939 to Peter and Anne Melnyk in Lamont, Alberta. She grew up on the family farm – a place she always cherished – with her younger siblings, Jerry, Marian and Ted. After graduating from Lamont High School in 1957, she moved to Edmonton to obtain her degree in Education at the University of Alberta, then taught at various elementary schools. Vera met her sister’s co-worker, Bill, at a curling bonspiel and they married in 1968. She continued to teach until they started their own family. Rick was born in 1975 and Terri-Lynn completed the family in 1977. Vera was the quintessential nurturing wife and mother. She loved caring for her family by providing them with home-cooked gourmet meals and hand-made clothing. She was also known to provide these things for family, friends, and acquaintances. Everyone was welcome in her home. Through all of life’s ups and downs she maintained her steadfast devotion to her family and her faith with a positive outlook. Vera’s later years were spent dining out, travelling, gardening, sewing, reading, watching sports and, of course, cooking and baking. Most of all she cherished the time she and Bill spent with Rick and his wife Jill, Terri and her husband Laurie, and four grandchildren. She adored being Baba to Eli, Molly, Andrew and Aiden. Vera will be greatly missed and forever remembered by everyone whose lives she touched.
