Waltraut Symanczyk, beloved wife of Otto Symanczyk, passed away at the age of 90 years old at the University of Alberta Hospital on September 10th, 2022. Wally is survived by her husband of 66 years, Otto, her sons Alan (Sylvia) and Walter (Kimberley) and her grandchildren Steven (Megan), Lindsay (Steven), Bryan (Nicole), Derek (Hayley), Michael (Reese), Victoria, Sophie and Erik and her great grandchildren (Ashton, Ethan, Jackson, and Brynnleigh). Wally was predeceased by her daughters Erica (David) and Valerie, her son-in-law Robert Cooper, and her brother Walter (Rosemary) Gerdts.
Wally was born in Vulcan, Alberta to Walter and Elsie Gerdts. She grew up in the Vulcan area before moving to a farm in the Rimbey area. Wally loved her time on the farm and had a wonderful time growing up in the community. She was actively involved in the 4-H club. Wally met the love of her life Otto at a Lutheran church tea. She went down to the basement to get some water for a friend where she met Otto, who later asked her to see a movie. Wally and Otto were married at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Rimbey on August 25th, 1956. Together they had a partnership built on a foundation of love, hard work and resilience.
Wally was a kind and warm person. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. She will be remembered as an accomplished homemaker, and devoted wife and mother. Among many of her passions and talents, she loved to garden and diligently tended to her flowers and plants. Wally was also a talented seamstress, cook and baker. She was often called upon to bake and decorate wedding cakes for family and friends.
As per her wishes, Wally will be cremated, and her life will be honoured privately by the family. The family wishes to thank the staff at Devonshire Village for their compassionate care. Donations in memoriam can be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
