Alexander Fergus Stirling, 87, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 15, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves his wife, Maureen Stirling; his daughter, Aileen Stirling and her husband Gus; daughter Adrienne Stirling and her husband Jim; son Graham Stirling and his wife Loretta; son Sean Stirling, as well as grandchildren Dylan, Nick, Alexandria, Ava and Ian.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland December 14, 1930, Fergus came of age during WWII and the Battle of Britain, which shaped his worldview and desire to serve others.  After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 1952 with a math & science degree, Fergus served in the Royal Air Force as an education officer, stationed in Iraq, from 1953-1956.  He also had a love of rugby and was a member of the Jordanhill Rugby Football Club as a front row forward (1950-1952), and while stationed in Baghdad, Iraq, played on the Royal Air Force rugby team (1953-1956). 
In 1956 he returned to Glasgow to marry the love of his life, Maureen, and they began a journey together that took them to London, England, then Ontario, Canada, where all four children were born, and ultimately to San Diego, where he and Maureen resided for the past 50 years. 
Over the course of his life as an educator, he worked for the Department of Education in Ontario, Canada, taught math and physics for San Diego City Schools (1968-1992), and also taught math at Grossmont Junior College (1981-1991).  In 1992, he was recognized by the San Diego Board of Education for his “many contributions to the young people of San Diego.”
Known for his adventurous spirit, wry sense of humor, candor and integrity, Fergus put his family first, seeking out opportunities so his children and grandchildren would have more prosperous lives.  He was generous, selfless, direct and honest.  He will be deeply missed by his family, who will be forever grateful for his deep love, caring guidance, and wisdom.
